Steps to Design A Great Book Cover

As you enter the world of writing and come to the one of publishing, it is time to start thinking about what you want for the cover of your book to be like.

Authors put in a lot of work to write books, but they also want to make sure their books reach a large audience and sell many copies. This is where the book cover comes to play. People are attracted by the kind of things they see so your book cover should be able to catch the eye of a book lover.

There are many books in the shelves of a library or bookstore, and you want yours to stand out. Your book will probably be judged by its cover and that isn’t a bad thing. Human beings are visual creatures and in the case of book buying, will use their visual judgement to decide whether they want to buy your book or not.

Below are some steps to ensure that your book cover catches the eyes of your readers:

  1. Get an idea of what you want your cover to be like

    Hire a graphic designer

Define the focus of your cover

Get an idea of what you want your cover to be like

Before you dive into the actual process of book cover design, you should have a little idea of what it is you want. You can do this by looking at other book covers in your genre to understand what is common about them all and then draw inspiration from them. It is your book and you want to be proud when you see it sitting on a shelf. Understand the elements you want to use in your cover and communicate that to your designer.

Hire a graphic designer

You might probably be tempted to design the cover of your book yourself but unless you are a professional graphic designer, this route is not really advised. You want quality so that’s what you should work to get. By now, you know your target audience. The cover that will appeal to a younger audience might not also appeal to an older audience. With this in mind, discuss what you want your cover to feel like with your graphic designer and try to communicate your thoughts because the more information the designer has, the more work they’ll put in to make you a cover you would love.

Define the focus of your cover

Your book has a focus and you want your book cover to reflect that. When a reader glances at your book, you want them to understand the general genre of your book and the tone it conveys. For example, you don’t want to use a cover with a horror theme for a romance story.
