CHOOSING THE BEST FORMAT FOR YOUR BOOK

The format your book will eventually be published in and distributed with is an important decision to make and there are a number of formats to choose from. These include digital (e-book), print and audio. Some formats work with any type of writing while others don’t. Depending on your type of book, it might work well with all types of book formats but some other book types may be better off in one format than the other.

Now, we will break down the different formats, the kind of books they are best for and how to make a decision on which to use.

Book formats

1. Digital books or E-books

A digital book is a perfect fit for books that have clickable links. This means that the type of book published in this format will contain supplemental materials that the reader can access by clicking on the link(s) provided in the book. You can’t embed links in a print or audio book. And if you did, your readers won’t be able to access the extra information through those links so you won’t get the same response rate.

You should also use the digital format if your audience has access to e-readers or if your book has optics the reader will want to keep for themselves. Also worthy of note is the fact that e-books are easy to distribute. As it is in a digital format, all people need to do is download it to their device of choice to access and begin reading the book.

2. Print books

Print books are best for book types people would want to access regularly. For example, a textbook would be best in a print format as the information there will be referenced and used often. Also, a book that makes use of many images would suit the print format as images are harder to manage in digital formats.

Books like cookbooks, reference books and books that contain areas for people to take notes are best printed. It is also important that you study and know your audience. The older audience may prefer books in print. Location also matters as you’d need to consider ways to sell or distribute your book to reach your readers, unlike the digital format where files are easily downloaded to a device of choice.

Audio books

If your audience would rather listen than read, maybe because of a lack of time, your book would be best in an audio format. Books that have clearly defined sections also do well with audio formats.

The preferences of your audience will determine the best format your book should be as they are the ones you are writing for. Also note that you can choose to publish your book in more than one format. You can easily write your book and through e-book conversion, have it changed to a digital format.
